Week 1 Update

We had a wonderful first week! Our scholars innovated structures in an Oil Derrick Design Challenge using the Engineering Design Process (see pictures below). They also practiced the Reading and Writing Workshop format, Independent Reading expectations, and they wrote about something fun that they did over the summer. Scholars have been working hard to download/delete Apps, organize their iPads, and to set up Google Drive. I expect that our iPads will be a excellent tool to aid your child's learning this school year.

Fundraising at Dollar Tree!
5th grade will be running a Pepsi concession stand this Saturday at the Grand Opening of the new Dollar Tree. (On Wm D Tate, next door to JoAnn's). ALL proceeds help to lower the cost of their October Sky Ranch trip. It is only from 11:00-2:00, so we hope to get a lot of customers during those 3 hours. Fantastic First Day

What a fantastic first day! First, our fourth graders learned about the Engineering Design Process, focusing on the "Imagine" step. They discussed symbols of Texas, and they began to imagine a design for an oil derrick model. They were also introduced to the GCISD 25 Book Challenge and our reading and writing workshop structures. My favorite part of our class today was hearing our scholars talk about series/books/authors that they love. They were already recommending great books to each other! What a wonderful start to the school year!

I enjoyed meeting everyone who came to visit our classroom at Meet the Teacher Night, and I am looking forward to working with you this 2014-15 school year!

Here is an overview of what we will be learning the first Nine Weeks.
