The weather was perfect today for our fourth grade walking field trip to the Botanical Gardens at Heritage Park in Grapevine. First, scholars took time to share and listen to the American Indian wildflower legends that they had written in class. They paid extra attention to the science concepts that were included in the plot of each legend to explain how the flower was created. Later, a horticulturist talked with our scholars about the life cycles of plants, including annual, perennial, and biannual plants, as well as pollination and types of seed dispersal. Scholars also showed off all that they knew about the life cycle of insects, including butterflies! Next, scholars were taken on a scavenger hunt to identify plants, animals, and other things in nature. Scholars really enjoyed smelling and learning about how some plants have adapted so their leaves give off a scent to attract and repel insects and other animals. Finally, scholars worked together to plant herbs in the herb garden. What a wonderful day!
